Paolo started studying the trumpet at the age of eleven with his hometown Local Band.
After a range of different musical experiences he discovered Jazz in 1980 and started playing professionally, recording for RAI in 1982 under the guidance of M° Bruno Tommaso while attending Seminaries at Siena Jazz.
In 1984 Fresu graduated in Trumpet at Cagliari Conservatory and in the same year he won "RadioUno jazz", "Musica jazz" e "RadioCorriere TV" as Best Italian Jazz Talent. In 1990 he won the Top Jazz prize from ‘Musica Jazz’ as best Italian musician, best group (Paolo Fresu Quinet) and best record (Arrigo Polillo prize for "Live in Montpellier"). In 1996 he went on to win the best European musician with one of his compositions for 'Académie du jazz' of Paris and the prestigious "Django dOr," as best European Jazz Musician. In the year 2000 he was nominated for Best International Musician.
