MISINTERPROTATO / TRICHOTOMY - Variations (review by dreadpirateroberts)
«Thanks, Iain! I like em a lot, and I agree - they have an awesome sense of humour huh? Just got their new one not long ago, it's another great album. I feel the same, like, shame on me as an Aussie for not knowing about them sooner - their first album is around ten years ago I think!»

MISINTERPROTATO / TRICHOTOMY - Variations (review by dreadpirateroberts)
«Nicely written review. Shame on me (who lives there) for having never heard of this Brisbane trio. Everyone should have a look at their 'Chase' video posted on this site - very funny visuals from a band not frightened to laugh at themselves - very refreshing (the music's good too)»

KRZYSZTOF KOMEDA - Astigmatic (review by snobb)
«I grew up listening to Polish radio where almost all songs were "jazzy" :). And I believe that modern Polish jazz scene is one of most vibrant in Europe. With their "yass" roots younger generation of Polish nu jazz bands are absolute continent leaders in that genre»

KRZYSZTOF KOMEDA - Astigmatic (review by snobb)
«Great, great review. I've just bought Astigmatic and I'm speechless. As you said, it's depressing how overlooked the music from the central and eastern Europe is - only because we haven't been a part of the western world at the time. Komeda was a world-class genius and should be considered on par with the biggest names of jazz. Well, all I can say is thank you for promoting Polish Jazz :)»

MILES DAVIS - Birth of the Cool (review by js)
«Yeah, its was all recorded in the late 40s and released on singles over the years. I do find this album hard to grasp and I listen to it all the time. I wish I could find another record like it, some things by Dolphy or Mingus are similar, also there are a lot of new ensembles that draw on some of this direction, but I can't think of their names.»

MILES DAVIS - Birth of the Cool (review by js)
«I think this is easily one of Miles' most 'dense' albums - there's probably a better word for it, but this one took me the longest to get into and enjoy (which is fine, I don't mind that at all.) Maybe something about the 'bop' but not 'bop' that you mention, how the arrangements stradle more than a few approaches. And I always thought it sounded 'out of time' in terms of that 1958 release too, which is probably why I had trouble contextualising it on first listen...before I read the liner notes properly!»

LOUIS MAZETIER - Louis Mazetier 'Fats Waller Medley'[video]
«Exquisitely performed! During college, completely transcribed 13 pages of Waller's "Smashing Thirds"... although I was a piano major, I still had difficulty with that piece. Also, the performer's tapping foot reminded me of an Oscar Peterson comment. He said that his piano teacher in Montreal thought that tapping one's foot while playing was odd, but there was something infectious about the rhythm- something like that, anyway. Well, music is about feeling, right?»

RICHARD "GROOVE" HOLMES - Richard "Groove" Holmes & Les McCann ft. Joe Pass - Comin' Through The Apple[video]
«This is a great track, showcasing each performer's considerable skill. My friend, B3 grinder Moe Denham, used to tour the "chitlin circuit" with Groove. I gave to Moe a copy of Groove's album, "Live on Basie's Bandstand". Moe said, "Man, I never forgot what it was like when Groove would take off and we had to grab that train and hold on!" Also, I believe that Joey D shouts out to Groove's single note light fingered percussive style in the first half of his delicate solo on Pennies From Heaven, from the album "Plays Sinatra His Way".»
