This is a scalding Latin/Fusion/Funk/Lounge masterpiece. Released in 1976, Caldera showed incredible promise with this debut, only to release three successive records resulting in little to no fanfare. It’s a shame, this band was one of fusion’s finest outfits in the late 1970′s. One wonders why “Guanacaste”, the albums opener, didn’t become a club classic. This is incredibly danceable fusion with a slightly discofied latin beat. Great tune. “Coastin”, The 2nd track, is deftly executed funk. The flute and female singer adds a light touch to the beginning of a greasy track. After that the keys and guitar melt to form a Hancock/Santana sound. Brilliant. Then, the album throws in some extended highlights–the kind of music you’d love to hear sitting in a hammock in Costa Rica watching the sun go down. Great vocal and key work make this set memorable, well worth throwing in at your next barbecue.

Here is a fusion band no body really knows about, why? well, not a whole lot available on CD, or Download for that matter. I have all 4 of their albums on vinyl, and I absolutely love them, to me, this band plays the style Weather Report was trying to play at this time, But Weather Report lost almost all of their fire in my opinion after Black Market, and That album was just average in my opinion. Caldera Smokes with authentic world sounds, sort of in a Santana kind of way, bluesier, earthier i guess, the music seems more spontaneous and not composed to death like much of the Jaco years Weather Report, I will be honest I have tried hard to warm up to the Jaco Years, but to no avail. I never really thought Jaco was all that, to be honest, Stanley Clarke is more my cup of tea. The best way to describe Caldera's Debut, think Return To Forever and Santana mixed, some things here remind me of some of the DiMeola solo albums a tad, Caldera is World Fusion but with fire and jungle grittiness at times, Something Weather Report lost, if they ever had it, Caldera mixes many styles within their music, and some times they do get close to the commercial realm, but this music never bores me.
