PRINCE — Prince (review)

Warthur
It might not be the wildly innovative funk-soul-pop-rock he became famous with, but Prince's self-titled album - recorded on the cheap and in a hurry to try and make back the money his label lost on his debut - is a charming slice of romantic soul with just a hint of experimentalism here and there. (The guitars that blare forth on Bambi, for instance, recall the experiments in merging rock and soul that would dominate Prince's work of the 1980s.) Several songs, such as With You or I Wanna Be Your Lover are some of his gentlest and most touching love songs, not least because they lack the lust-crazed edge of much of his subsequent work.
