New Jersey-born percussionist Scott Amendola is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. He met guitarist Charlie Hunter soon after arriving in San Francisco in 1992. The two joined forces along with Will Bernard and John Schott to form the innovative band T. J. Kirk (Warner Bros.). T. J. Kirk went on to be nominated for a Grammy in 1995. A year and a half later, Scott joined the Charlie Hunter Quartet. The band toured worldwide and recorded three records for Blue Note. Scott's latest project is his own Scott Amendola Band. The self-titled debut CD features Jenny Scheinman on violin, guitarist Dave MacNab, bassist Todd Sickafoose, and Eric Crystal on reeds.

Scott's music ranges from hard-hitting grooves to lush ballads, and from his original compositions to covers by such artists as Jimi Hendrix, Fela, and Nick Drake.

Scott Amendola is known as respectable West Coast jazz session drummer, but he regularly releases his own solo albums during some last years.Everyone familiar with his session works know how stylistically diverse his collaboration works are, similar situation occurs with his solo albums.

"Believe" is Scott's album with two guitarists, violinist and bassist on board, and one of guitarists is Nels Cline, so you can expect plenty of rock improvs influences there. And you will be right - but only in part.

First of all - all album's compositions are written by Amendola himself and it means you will hear a collection of memorable tunes here. A lot of strings in album music gives some density to instrumentation, but in general there are lot of space in it.

Stylistically album contains very diverse compositions - from country-like song to characteristic Cline's electric guitar scratchy rock improv and even soulful ballade. Being a mixture of musical influences, the music is catchy enough and musicians' high competence makes it a pleasant and rewarding listening. Possibly one of the best Amendola's solo album to date.

After some year of playing with leading SF area musicians, in 1998 drummer Scott Amendola started his own project. This album is his (self-released) debut. All songs but one are his own compositions, and he successfully demonstrates wide variety of genres he are competent in. Very melodic, fun and inspired, this album contains compositions from funk to bluesy electric fusion to folksy jazz.

Music is mostly mid tempo, not too complex, but very playful, played by acoustic band with electric guitarist. All album is very collective result, not soloist could be mentioned - every collaborating musician has enough space and time for his improvs. Electric guitarist Dave MacNab has quite bluesy (often - Bill Frisell-like) sound, but in combination with small orchestra of vertical bass, drummer, very attractive sax player and violinist all music is very full bodied and varies enough for not being boring.

Quite rare successful balance of accessible and not polished or pop-oriented music, nice listening for everyone interested in modern fusion.

Drummer Scott Amendola is mostly known by his collaboration with Nels Cline, Bill Frisell and some more experimental jazz and rock projects. This album is kind of surprise in his discography: he plays with fully acoustic trio, including Nels Cline Singers' bassist Devin Hoff and clarinetist Ben Goldberg.

Musically the material is represented by ten less known Monk's compositions. Played by piano-less trio, they are mainly used as tunes for re-working. Amendola will play on Goldberg solo recordings later, so everyone familiar with Goldberg's strong album "Go Home" can imagine , how they sound playing together.

Fortunately, album's compositions don't sound as tribute - modern rhythm section with soloing clarinet just produce their own music, based on Monk's knotted techniques.Nice listening, different from endless Monk's legacy reworks (for good).
