Norwegian saxophonist playing a mix of jazz and norwegian folk, with haunting, repetitive melodies , sounds familiar? The music will also sound familiar to you but it's not Jan Garbarek, it's his compatriot Karl Seglem. And beside saxophone he also plays goat/antelope horn, whatever that is, and has his own label NORCD.. And it sounds good even it doesn't have the special cool timbre of Garbarek's music. Oscicles is his 27th album. With an ensemble combining the sounds of goat and antelope horns with mBira (African thumb harp), fiddle and the more “traditional” jazz setup of saxophone, electric guitar, bass and drums, Seglem truly creates world fusion. Although the album was recorded almost entirely live(in the wood-paneled rooms of the Herrenhaus-Hotel in the remote town of Salderatzen), the production is very good. Seglem together with Earl Høgmo on fiddle, Erland Dahlen and Kenneth Ekornes on drums and percussion and Olav Torget on guitar manage to pull off a good album which for me has one big problem and this problem is called Jan Garbarek, I just couldn't abstain from comparing the two artists and their music.
