“African Time” by Gwen & Tiana - from the album “African Time” out April 12th 2019

African Time is the debut album by jazz/soul/world music vocalists Gwen & Tiana. Produced by guitarist and composer Femi Temowo (Amy Winehouse, Gregory Porter and George Benson) the album features eleven original compositions and a fine interpretation of ‘Yesterday’ (Lennon/McCartney), arranged by Temowo.

“Gwen & Tiana’s debut album African Time is a declaration of love: love for oneself as a person rising from the ashes, overcoming hardships by being one's own best friend, love for Africa and for one's Blackness as a form of self-care, love for music and the arts, for the paths we choose for ourselves against all odds, and love for life that can be sunny or blue, hectic or slow, full of surprises and improvisations, just like soul and jazz.” Jo Güstin, lyricist on African Time.

Gwen, who is from Gabon and Togo and Tiana, whose roots are in Cameroon and Madagascar, left their countries over ten years ago to develop their knowledge of music through studying in France. After performing at gospel and soul concerts across Europe as both backing vocalists and lead singers, they officially became a duo in 2012. It was the beginning of a process of reflection, of research and experimentation that led them to become musically mature and to create a repertoire reflecting their image and identity. “We wanted to go beyond soul music, which has always been an important part of our artistic expression,” explains Gwen. “Exploring African culture enables us to create connections, to build bridges between Africa and Europe, throughout our musical mixture that has the taste of our own influences.”
