VCDC was formed at the 2009 MaiJazz Festival in Stavanger, Norway, when Motland and Solberg invited Gjerstad and Lonberg-Holm to join them for a performance. Their collaboration continued, and following a 2010 Scandinavian tour they recorded their self-titled debut album on the Oslo based Hispid record label
Following their 2011 album on the Norwegian Hispid label, the quartet of clarinetist Frode Gjerstad, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, drummer Stale Liavik Solberg and vocalist Stine Janvin Motland perform two excellent extended improvisations at Galleri Sult in Stavanger. Well-established and masterful players, the improvisations are unhurried yet fascinatingly detailed - the band avoids a slow building and release, instead maintaining an even level of discourse that varies through the performances. Stine Janvin Motland brings an unusual quality to the music, varying her approaches and catching the listener through unexpected utterances and vocalizations - her ending to the album on "Sultan for Seitan" leaves the listener
