Born in Regensburg, Bavaria, Tobias Meinhart started playing drums at seven and picked up the saxophone at thirteen. By seventeen Tobias had joined the Bob Brookmeyer Orchestra on tour to Portugal as a roadie and his focus became on music.
Tobias studied with Domenic Landolf, one of the great saxophone players in Europe, at the Music Department of Basel’s University in Switzerland. Further studies led him to the “Conservatorium van Amsterdam” and the “University for the Arts” in Bern. His teachers included Andy Scherrer, Ferdinand Povel, Johannes Enders, Adrian Mears, Jorge Rossy and Wolfgang Muthspiel.
He also attended Masterclasses with Joe Lovano, Dick Oatts, Kurt Rosenwinkel, George Garzone, and others. At one of those workshops, Tobias met with the great trumpet player Ingrid Jensen. Since then they have had a close relationship and she has helped him in many ways.
