Stu Hunter, is a case in point. Perhaps best known in the improvised music world for his largescale suites such as ‘The Migration’ and ‘The Gathering’ he has also produced, performed with, and co-written for a diverse range of artists from singers Tina Harrod and Katie Noonan to Silverchair and actor Russel Crowe’s band, ’30 odd foot of grunts.’
Hunter’s piano style is crisp, rhythmic, and well-articulated. He pays keen attention to inner voicings and to steering the direction of phrases. The recorded sound is on the dry side, particularly when compared to the deep, sonorous productions favoured by Scandinavian keyboardists of note such as Tord Gustavsen, Esbjörn Svensson, Ketil Bjørnstad or Jan Gunnar Hoff.
