Mercury’s beginnings at the Royal Northern College of music have set the tone for our whole story. Never wanting to be the “[insert name here] Quartet” the band started out with the mission to be a collaborative entity not just by name or method but in the sound as well. Thus we bring our love of music from outside the Jazz tradition into our compositions and improvising alike, and create an interactive and rich sound that is as much about the ensemble texture as it is the melodic focus. The aim is to, at times, subvert the hierarchy of the traditional Quintet format; to find new sounds and textures, informed by Indie, Grunge, Classical and Electronic music and to bring those together with the Jazz tradition we love.
