Le Van’s voice has something of the Chet Baker about it – he can do deadpan, has a slightly shaded tone and occupies the same tenor range some of the time. But the Chet comparison turns out to be a lazy one and completely unfair to Le Van. He has a richer, stronger voice, is firmer not only in the high tenor range but also down in baritone territory, and doesn’t have any of that slightly mannered, affected Baker air of not really trying at all.
