Another infectiously groovy funk-rock album from the P-Funk collective's more psychedelic half. Whether you get it on vinyl or CD, make sure you get the bonus material (presented as bonus tracks on most CD versions and provided as an EP with the original LP) which includes a wonderful live version of Maggot Brain, but the album itself includes plenty of great material. Tracks like One Nation Under a Groove suggest a convergence between the approaches of Funkadelic (who tended towards guitar-led psych-funk) and Parliament (who leaned closer to traditional R&B), but the song Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock is a well-pitched warning to listeners not to impose rigid boundaries on artists - particularly artists as creative and unpredictable as George Clinton and his crew.
