One of most respectable British jazz bass player debut album is in reality two acoustic bassists duo recordings!All album's music consists of Dave Holland and Barre Phillips bass improvs and interplays (Holland occasionally plays cello as well; there are some places on recording material which sound as overdubbing and loops were used, there are nothing told about it nowhere though).

Just two bassists free form avant-jazz album doesn't sound as easy listening, and it isn't. First two long compositions are just improvs (but surprisingly both them sound better structured than the rest of material). Holland recorded this album more or less at the same time when he was busy with Chick Corea's avant-garde jazz project Circle, and his solo debut perfectly demonstrates what kind of music he was in at that time.

Album is highly experimental with accent on researches of bass instrument and sound possibilities.Music varies from free form jazz to non-jazz avant-garde with serious influence of neo-classical music in moments. Possibly, two improvs and closing "Song for Clare" are most attractive album's compositions for listener. Important release for researchers and Holland's serious fans, this album is hardly the album you will listen more than once per year (if will repeat the listening at all).
