I graduated in 1990 with a BA in music. I spent four years in the Brown Jazz Ensemble under Matt McGarrell, both performing and cutting my teeth as a jazz composer and arranger; rehearsals were sufficiently informal and open that I was encouraged to bring in ideas, rather than fully realized compositions.
In September, 1991, I enrolled in the Master's Program in Jazz Composition at Manhattan School of Music. I studied with a working composer, honing my technique and aligning it with my compositional ideas. Among the graduation requirements were assembling and rehearsing a big band, preparing a performance, publicizing the event, renting a venue, providing programs, recording the music, and working the room in the concert's aftermath.
