ALAN SHORTER picture
Alan was born in the Ironbound District in Newark, New Jersey. He started on alto saxophone, but switched to trumpet after graduating from high school. He attended Howard University but soon rebelled against the ultra-conservative atmosphere and dropped out (he later attended and graduated from New York University (NYU)). He played his first professional gigs with a local bebop big band called the Jackie Bland Band (other members included his brother Wayne, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, and pianist Walter Davis, Jr.). He was very much a bebop player in his early years, but soon gravitated towards free jazz, and with the exception of six months he spent in a US Army Band, continued to play in that style for the rest of his career. He recorded two albums as a leader: Orgasm (1968) and Tes Esat (1971) (both were out of print for many years until re-issued by Verve Records in read more...

Wayne Shorter is perfectly known for every jazz fan and has some strong (few even great)albums (mostly coming from 70s)and long list of far not so interesting pop-jazz or world fusion later works. His brother trumpeter Alan Shorter is virtually unknown - to be honest technically he is far not so skilled,as his much more popular brother.

Alan Shorter recorded just two albums (in 1969 and 1971), both contains quite quirky avant-garde jazz."Orgasm" is his debut work and on its own manner this album is really worth listening.Fortunately the album isn't leader-trumpeter's work, but more collaborative product, and all participated musicians are of high level (including Gato Barbieri on tenor sax and bassist Charlie Haden).

Musically album contains six Shorter's originals, complex, screamy, angular in moments sounding quite dark and even nervous.Alan's manner is a bit similar to Ornette Colleman's avant-garde recordings, without same technical precision level though. In all album sounds quite fresh and adventurous and dated well bringing us in full the spirit of avant-garde jazz circa 1968 (being a rarity for decades this album fortunately was re-released on CD by PolyGram in 1998).
