Born Martti Vesala, 15 February 1945, Mantyharju, Finland, d. 4 December 1999, Helsinki, Finland. Easily the most influential Finnish jazz musician of his generation, drummer-composer Vesala did not begin to play until he was 20 years old. Growing up in the middle of the Finnish forest, his only access to music was in the dancehalls of neighbouring villages where Nordic tango was available. After a season of playing for country dances he advanced rapidly through psychedelic rock and free jazz, then checked into Helsinki's Sibelius Academy for courses in orchestration, only to drop out impatiently after a year. He roamed through Asia in the early 70s, collecting instruments and soaking up local music in India, Bali and Java. In 1972 he formed a short-lived co-operative trio with Jan Garbarek and Arild Andersen (Triptykon), and in 1975 a more compatible quartet co-led with Tomasz Stanko.
