How Akiko has blended punk, club and blues over the last decade to create a jazz style that is fun, free and has pulled club and mainstream jazz styles together.
When Akiko Ishii first debuted in the jazz scene 10 years ago at the age of 24, with braided hair, an R&B style and a punk/rock tempo, the industry was skeptical.
“Jazz in Japan at that time was a lot more rigid. You were not considered to be a jazz singer unless you fit a certain style or category, such as swing or classical, and your image had to be sophisticated,” says Akiko.
Now she is celebrating a decade as a trailblazing jazz singer in Japan with a compilation album called “Akiko”.
