They are handy. The Blue Notes are fine on cd as well. If you bought them on record if you could get some of them? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, catch you tomorrow

CD is fine with me. Though they are not as natural as vinyl they never wear down from repeated physical contact from a stylus. However, when is the laser turntable going to come down in price? They must cost a small fortune to purchase now. I remember when the first CD players cost close to $2.000.00
 Now playing:

^ interesting, I didn't remember that CD players used to so high.
When professional samplers first came out, the price range was 20,000 to 30,000, if I remember correctly. That also dropped considerably over the years.

Cool, but Montenegro is usually an easy thrift store find in the states for $1.
but I have no idea how our currency values (US-Aus) compare.

Cry What! a dollar

After mentioning it I feel a need to hear it.  "Free Jazz". This set is essential stuff. All the Atlantic material. He does grow on you but you must peservere with Ornette's music. One of the first Avante albums that I bought apart from Dolphy's "Out To Lunch" and Coleman's Blue Notes (At The Golden Circle Cool)was a Henry Threadgill "Where's Your Cup" when it was released. Funny thing I played it at the shop and thought "nah" but it was like the echoes stayed in my brain and I was back next day to get it. I was on the road to Damascus when that light hit Wink

Henry Threadgill is great, his reputation will grow over the years, he was the 80s Ellington/Mingus.

By the way, on a different subject, do you know Bill Evans early career, say about the first 4 or 5 albums. If so, how would you tag his style in that day, I already know what I think, but I want to check against someone else. His current tags on our site need adjusting.

Not all John, but just about. "New Jazz Conceptions" is Hard  Bop to me Same with "Everybody Dig's Bill Evans" . It has more punch than a West Coast sound from the time but it is not really Modal either yet. The majority from both albums are covers or standards and Philly Joe Jones is on drums on "Everybody" albumWink

"Portrait In Jazz" though I would leave Cool as with "Moon Beams"

Back to some more Henry,

He is Fab, John. I always recommend him to people. He already has that reputation for me. In all honesty he is one of the few today that are still having a really good crack at it,

My wife just got out of bed. "Bugger her, she can listen too". Never know, she might get to like it but she is planning to go out : might get her to move along a little quicker LOL

Re Evans: Thanks Matt, Hard Bop is exactly what I was thinking. Later in his career you get some Cool as he heads toward the Post Bop sound etc.

Introspective - in high contrast to his earlier work, some lovely moments throughout - especially on 'haiku'
