Excellent!

Kazu ClapClapClapClapClap 5 points

and John should get a couple for the ground work he put in too. I'll leave this one open a little longer in case any one wants to take a stab at the Weather Report album/song.

#2 is Weather Report ????????? ????? ???? ??? etc
#2.1 is Charles Mingus (from The Black Saint...) 'Solo Dancer' - 1963 - Impulse!

Round 2 was convinced that it was certain that it was WR and Black Saint now. However, I forgot the name of the music.

I like 2.1, its Ellington influenced AG, which usually means either Sun Ra or Mingus. I'll go with Mingus.

Big smile I'd hoped this round would start easier - I'll save up a harder one for later though

Would have loved to have seen them live!

How about 2.1 - I tried to make it a little easier too

Round 2 is too easy, I won't answer and give someone else a chance, anything from that era is the soundtrack of my youth. I remember this song well, but I will have to think to get the correct album, but I think I remember the song title, the band is a cinch, I probably saw them play this song live.

I wonder if it's because they're playing it faster?

Here we go, a reveal:

#1 is Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond (from Jazz Impressions of Japan) 'Fujiyama' - 1964 - CBS

#1.1 is Don Ellis (from Soaring) 'Invincible' -1973 - MPS Records

#1.2 is Miles Davis (from More Music from the Legendary Carnegie Hall Concert) 'Teo' - CBS

^ Jimym Cob  - yeah, I wonder whether the section I've snipped, is actually a bit of a cover inside the main song, I should re-listen to the studio cut and find out. It's recorded not too longer after Sketches of Spain

Thats an interesting Miles cut, sounds like hippie music or bongo beatnik music actually, the sort of thing Miles would often avoid. Who is the drummer?

ClapClapClapClap 4 points!

Miles is the leader, but if the piano player was still alive, he'd be 9 years older than Herbie..

Album names and songs for two of the videos are still open if anyone wants to guess.
I'm gonna duck away and check back in a little while. Food beckons hahaha

Grrr, youtube is very helpfully recognising the songs and trying to name them for me, in terms of acknowledging the source!

For 1.2 - close on on one, but not so close on the other

Close! I think there's some similarity with Bill and the piano player in video 1. Both 'Cool' players for sure.
I don't know Phil Woods very well, but I suspect if he's like Charlie then then both are like the sax player in video 1.

Any thoughts on the other categories?
And should I offer hints? I feel guilty just knowing the answer Big smile

Amad Jamal and Lee Konitz ?

Nope, but the sax player was definitely influenced by Konitz

Dammit!!! I should have got this the first time, its Brubeck and Desmond, that seems so obvious now.

Hahaha!   I was worried it would be too easy if I choose some of the group's 'bigger' pieces, but this one comes from an album I'll leave unnamed for a little longer...

Cool - picked it from the strings! I'd have NO chance if I had to guess these.

'Soaring' from 73 - 'Invincible' is the song. It's not that well known I think, or at least, not that particular song from Soaring anyway.   I'm trying to find songs that aren't too well known, but might still hint at the artist/leader. It's tough actually, I'm not sure I've got the balance between little known song/recognizable style yet.
