The other day my Pandora funk/blues-rock station started playing Smoke on the Water, a live version from the 80s. The way Purple played the song was nothing like a bar band, everyone was just free riffing through the whole song like a funk jazz band. Very few "rock" bands can work within that much freedom.

Ah, lovely, just. My favorite album of his, marvellous how he switches to Rhodes and then back to piano. He didn't over-use it, although he wasn't a master of the instrument (rhodes), he did well trying it.

Back to the dentist today. Reckon I have a dead tooth (Root canal), hot really gets it going but I may be lucky and it is something else but I doubt it as this tooth was filled only a few months back after the one next to it was ripped out. I have been putting up with this for a week hoping it would go away LOL I should no better. Can't rip this one, have to save it.

Good toothache music, dunno if such a thing exists but I will try

Mr Soul, will do

I completely forgot to mention that for months Brad Mehldau has been the jazz piano guy for me. How could I forget about him? His covers of Nick Drake's "River Man" and Radiohead's "Everything in Its Right Place" are outstanding.

Currently listening to:

It's piano leading, nothing else. No brass whatsoever. Yes-s-s!

^ That album is really hitting the spot. The melodic, jazzier sections are so good.

I don't know that album specifically, but Maceo is one of my favorites.

It's the only Maceo album I have. It's also one of the few funk albums that reaches the heights of late 60s/early 70s funk, ala James Brown, in modern times. With a dash of jazz and soul, it's just an all-around 5 star funk album.
