NIECHĘĆ Niechęć

Album · 2016 · Nu Jazz

This young Polish band was a complete surprise for me!

On their second album, the selt titled Niechęć (pronounced Niehenti) managed to do the feat of mixing quite disparate things like Post Rock and Jazz Rock and making them work together!

At various times the Jazz Fusion school, which is so strong in Poland, takes us by storm and even I, who do not like Jazz Fusion, just gave up and enjoy their music.

44 minutes of quality music that is worth checking and, even though I didn't hear many new albums in these last two years, one of the best albums released in Poland in 2016!

JONI MITCHELL Hejira

Album · 1976 · Vocal Jazz

Flashback: About 15 years ago it was not as easy as today, the internet world already existed and already gave all the signs of what the future would be like for music, but it still was not what it is today: a click and we heard a record...

So, my first real exposure to the music of Joni Mitchell was with what I could lay my hands on: and it was the 'Dog Eat Dog' album that I accidentally found in a second hand shop in the center of São Paulo for less than a dollar.

Well, now I know that this is not even close the best way to know Joni's music, Dog Eat Dog is pretty bad.

Back to the present. A few days ago I was watching for the second time the documentary Jaco and she appeared there talking about the album Hejira (in which Jaco Pastorius plays), and suddenly I remembered how much I love her music and that I had not yet heard Hejira.

Joni Mitchell has always been a goddess as a songwriter, her way of playing the guitar (with several different tunings) open new melodies and her compositions gain an even more original air. It's no different in Hejira. This record sounds so modern and up to date, even today. It fits in with Jazz Fusion, which had been developed a few years prior and was about to open doors with names like Weather Report, Return to Forever and Al Di Meola, but it is also Folk and it works, very well!

Hejira is a pleasure to hear from beginning to end and worth the hearing.

TOHPATI Tohpati Ethnomission: Save The Planet

Album · 2010 · World Fusion

Tohpati Ethnomission's a group from Indonesia, yeah, Indonesia. And probably the first thing we have in mind when we think about this country is some kind of exhotic music, well, it's not that the exhotic don't make any part of the group's music, but it's not the main focus here, the 'thing' here is gather both together, exhotic and 'secular' music, like jazz/fusion, progressive rock and rock n roll. The mind behind the group is Tohpati (guitars), that is also part of simakDIALOG. In Save The Planet, first album of Tohpati Ethnomission he's with Indro Hardjodikoro (bass), Endang Ramdan (percussion), Demas Narawangsa (drums and percussion) that had only 16 years old on the time they recorded, Diki Suwarjiki (suling, a kind of flute) and Lestari (voice on track 2).

What we have in Save The Planet is quite good, in fact, more than good. Highlits like 'Selamatkan Bumi' and his 9 minutes long, 'Drama' (that reminds some King Crimson's Robert Fripp moments), 'Ethno Funk', 'Inspirasi Baru' (and the great bass solo), 'Perang Tanding' (moments that resembles some Frank Zappa) and 'Amarah' (and the various guitars), shows us that the band have A LOT of potential.

But unfortunatelly the group sometimes bet on calm and slow compositions, which I don't like, I don't think it fits their style.

But all in all Save The Planet worth the hearing! Specially when it comes to jazz rock/fusion lovers. The album have some irregularities but shows clearly the bright future Tohpati and his mates can have if they keep playing and writing like that. It's a waiting game, but in my opinion it'll worth.

DEWA BUDJANA Joged Kahyangan

Album · 2013 · Post-Fusion Contemporary
Cover art Buy this album from MMA partners
Really nice and smoothy album by Indonesian guitar player Dewa Budjana! I got used to have Moonjune Records albums in a Jazz Fusion line and this kind of music really don't hold any water for me as I prefer something that was built and something with melody.

For my surprise Joged Kahyangan (2013) is one of this records! Dewa instead of trying to go on full Free Jazz do what you want wrote some really pretty melodies in a more traditional Jazz style, there's even a Vocal Jazz track on the album (As You Leave My Nest) with singer Janis Siegel.

This is the kind of album that is indeed a joy to listen to and you can enjoy it even while reading, but that doesn't make it a 'background music' album as Dewa is a great guitar player and the line up on the album is amazing.

Recommended! Please Moonjune, more of this kind of releases!

MYSTERIES OF THE REVOLUTION Mysteries Of The Revolution

Album · 2008 · Nu Jazz

Mysteries Of The Revolution is a trio from England that plays a mix of Instrumental Jazz Rock with touchs of Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion here and there. The trio is formed by BB Davis (drums, flutes, percussion and vocals), Dan Biro (keyboards and percussion) and Mark Smith (bass). Their self-titled debut album was released in 2008 by Blue Serene Focus and according to the band they're now in studio recording their second album.

To be honest with you I was expecting some Jazz Fusion nonsense with loads of free improvised music and not much direction to it. What a mistake!

Mysteries Of The Revolution (2008) is an album that pretty much follows the Symphonic Prog patch in many moments (like in the fantastic 'The Crunch') but with a Jazz Rock feeling to it like in bands as Weather Report or Passport. More Jazz Rock/Prog moments can also be heard in 'Romantica'. We have some more pure Jazz moments in 'Storius Sensorius' and in the bass moment of 'Nico' where Mark Smith shines with amazing lines.

There's some small moments on the record and I do think that 64 minutes is way too much for an album like this but the overall feeling that stays after listening to Mysteries Of The Revolution (2008) is that we have a great album with a fantastic production and musicianship and loads of great vintage sounding instruments.

This is an album that you can easily listen with a smile on your face. A must have for Jazz Rock lovers!
