I'd start with Sun Ra, very interesting person for a portrait.

I'd love to see a cartoon drawing of Fats Waller

This is somewhat related, but a while ago I found this site which may prove useful for finding good images to draw from.

Also, please post your art! I'd love to see it.

Just take care, if you draw based on famour photos, you might get intro trouble like this guy did:  http://waxy.org/2011/06/kind_of_screwed/" rel="nofollow - http://waxy.org/2011/06/kind_of_screwed/

If an organisation sees you making money off their product dead or alive, they'll come looking for you. Still a hell of a lot of people still do it especially on Ebay.

Amazing how artist like Peter Blake get away with it. His Elvis silkscreen print is above £4,000, and he just cuts out the images.

Fats Waller Great Idea! Jazz P

remainds me of a laurel and Hardy I drew.

Hes' got the face for a toon.

Never thought of a cartoon.

Damn, that's really interesting. Sidenote, I'd also love to hear some of that music.

Pops, Satchmo or Louis Armstrong. Does not get anymore iconic than that.

I'm working on a Monk and Chet at the moment, but I'm looking at the toon idea of Fats Waller thanks to Jazz Pianist's recommendation.

Just been searching Google to find a link to a cartoon artist (name forgotten for the moment) who's work appeared in Jazzwise over ten years ago - but instead came across this bit of fun:
