Vocalist Joan Belgrave, widow of the late Detroit musician Marcus Belgrave, has announced the first Marcus Belgrave Scholarship Fundraiser. The event will be held March 10 at 7 p.m. at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History,
315 E. Warren, in Detroit, Mich. The concert will feature Joan Belgrave along with several of the late trumpeter’s prominent protégés, including pianist Geri Allen, drummer Karriem Riggins, saxophonist James Carter, trumpeters Rayse Biggs, Dwight Adams and Greg Glassman, bassist Marion Hayden and more. The concert will open with the Jazz Development Workshop youth ensemble (the last group of students Marcus Belgrave mentored), including his son, alto saxophonist Kasan Belgrave.

According to a press release, the scholarship fund “has been established to continue the 50-year legacy of Marcus Belgrave’s mentorship and support of young musicians.” (Belgrave was selected as the 2009 Kresge Foundation Eminent Artist.)

A free youth workshop will also be held on March 10, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., at the Carr Center, 311 E Grand River, Detroit.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.joanbelgrave.com or www.marcusbelgrave.com, or call (313) 640-8552 or (734) 945-1721.
