Sparks Quartet performed at Memphis' Green Room at the Concourse and put on one of the best musical performances I have ever witnessed. This group freely improvises everything they play, but do not expect some sort of cliche shriek fest. No, instead these four are very musical and listen intently to each other as the build their instantaneous compositions.

Sometimes they hit a groove for a while and then gradually let it slip apart. Sometimes they agree on a tonal center for a while and then move in and out of its range. For an hour and a half they were totally captivating. Not one dull moment.

Kudos also to the Green Room itself. What a great space. I was able to sit about 10 feet from pianist Eri Yamamoto and was even able to get up and watch her play from her left side without being too annoying or obtrusive. Memphis has come a long ways culturally during the last decade or so. Lets hope we continue to get great concerts like this and a great setting to watch them from as well.
