VOCALIST AND ACTOR DAN OLIVO
CREATES A BIG BAND SOUND
WITH SMALL COMBO ON HIS DEBUT
DAY BY DAY
SET FOR RELEASE ON JULY 8, 2022 ON AVA MARIA RECORDS

Singer and actor DAN OLIVO is a regular on the Southern California jazz scene. He performs with his combo at such high-end venues as The Bar Nineteen12 at The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Ritz Carlton at Corona Del Mar and Rancho Mirage, The Riviera Hotel, and the Frank Sinatra House in Palm Springs. He also has regular gigs at The Drake in Laguna Beach, Le Grand DTLA, and Chess Park Lounge in Glendale. For his debut album, DAY BY DAY, Olivo wanted to blend his sophisticated, elegant sound with the feel of a big band recording but performed by a smaller combo.

Being a performer is pretty much in Olivo’s DNA. Both his parents are actors who have worked extensively in theater and television. His earliest memories are of his mother and father on stage. His parents are of Italian heritage and met when his mother joined the Italian theater company that his father founded.

Although he was immersed in the theater world when he was young, music was one of his first loves. He played the saxophone in the music program at his junior high school, where another student showed him a video of Harry Connick Jr. and his big band. Olivo fell in love with big band music and especially the Italian crooners like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Tony Bennett, as well as Nat "King" Cole, Harry Connick, Jr. and Michael Bublé.

Olivo played and studied the sax through high school and into college when he decided to put music aside for a while to immerse himself in acting. He studied for several years at The Beverly Hills Playhouse, one of Los Angeles’ oldest and most respected acting schools and theater companies, and found work in live plays and film projects, such as the award-winning comedy “The Deposition of Lou Bagetta,” and “Charlie Says,” in which he played Leno LaBianca, who was murdered by Charles Manson’s “family.” He also found work on TV in shows like NBC's “Good Girls,” and Fox’s “New Girl” and “Malcolm in The Middle.”

Olivo got back into music when he re-connected with his old friend from high school, guitarist IAN ROBBINS. The two started gigging together and Ian has led Dan’s band ever since. Robbins is a regular with the Bruce Escovitz Jazz Orchestra and has performed and/or recorded with Barry Manilow, Bonnie Raitt, Wynton Marsalis, Peter Erskine, Toni Tennille, Louis Bellson, Ndugu Chancellor, Kurt Elling, Ernie Watts, and Marilyn McCoo, among others.

Robbins began writing arrangements for Olivo’s live shows, and after a couple of years they had enough music to make an album. Besides writing the arrangements, Robbins is also the producer and musical director for DAY BY DAY.

To achieve the big band sound Olivo wanted, Robbins brought on board some of the top players in the Los Angeles area, including bass player LYMAN MEDEIROS, one of the most in-demand bassists in Southern California. He has toured and recorded with legendary artists such as Steve Tyrell, Michael Bublé, and many more. Pianist and Hammond B3 organ player JOE BAGG has placed many times on Downbeat Magazine's Critics and Readers Polls and was featured performing on screen in Clint Eastwood movies J. Edgar and Jersey Boys. Bagg also recorded and toured with actor Jeff Goldblum & the Mildred Snitzer Jazz Orchestra.

Drummer and percussionist KEVIN WINARD has accompanied many top music acts including The Captain & Tennille for over ten years, pop icons Paul Anka, Vic Damone and Jack Jones, as well as Brazilian singer/guitarist Kleber Jorge, and many others. Reedman KYLE O’DONNELL is a mult-genre musician who has performed with many top jazz, pop and rock acts. Trombonist GARRETT SMITH has performed at the Grammys, the Emmys, the Kennedy Center Honors, American Idol and The Voice. He was also a member of the house band on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno for a number of years. Trumpeter JAMELLE ADISA is from New Orleans and currently resides in Los Angeles where he works with many artists and bands, including John Legend, Bob French’s Original Tuxedo Jazz Band, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove, and many more. Vocalist RENEE MYARA CIBELLI and Lyman Medeiros of the popular group Black Market Reverie join Dan in a duet of “It’s Only a Paper Moon.”
For DAY BY DAY, Olivo wanted a mix of styles, from pop songs, like “This Guy’s in Love with You,” featuring Bagg on organ, to bluesy rock including Fats Domino’s “I’m Walking.” Some songs go back a long way. "How Come You Do Me Like You Do?" was written in 1924 by a vaudeville comedy duo, while "It's Only a Paper Moon," written in 1932 for an unsuccessful Broadway play called The Great Magoo, features vocals by Medeiros and Cibelli. "It Had to Be You" was composed in 1924 by Isham Jones with lyrics by Gus Kahn. Other songs are straight out of the Great American Songbook, including the title track “Day by Day,” “Sway,” “Time After Time,” “All the Way,” and “More,” which was the theme song from the movie Mondo Cane. “L.O.V.E.” has not been recorded by many singers. It was written in 1965 and appeared on Nat “King” Cole’s last album of the same name. Because Harry Connick, Jr. has been such an important influence on Olivo, he recorded Connick’s “Come by Me,” as an homage to the singer and bandleader.
