Hello there!
I'm not good with genres actually, but I think in this case the title of the topic is clear and specific enough. What I'm looking for are some bands and big bands' names of the finest afro-cuban jazz of our time.

Most importantly: what I'm not looking for are some old and bad recordings of salsa or samba or rumba standards, nor some of the latin pop stuff we can easily find on spotify (which they also possibly have a disgusting album's cover aesthetic), but neither some stuff from Buena Vista Social Club et similia, of course.

I'd like to collect some names of good contemporary bands, who make some enjoyble recordings of salsa or samba jam sessions, with good vibes, good technique, fine touch on instruments, and most importantly a honest "dionysian thrill" - if you know what I mean. I don't disregard heavy drummings sessions as well, if you have any you can point me out.
Any recommendations about historical names I definitely must hear, no matter my tedious limitations, are well-appreciated as well.

Many thanks for helping me out, I'll be happy to give you feed-back as soon as I can, and discuss your pieces of advice.

Hi Gian I will post some albums for you below starting with some seventies and going up to more recent.

Larry Harlow...."Salsa"

Mark Dimond ...."Brujeria" Also released as Angel Canales...."Mas Sabor"( same album)

Ray Barretto....."Acid" ( Jazz) and also "Indestructible" ( Salsa)

Willie Colon...... "El Jucio"  also  "The Good the Bad The Ugly" ( both Salsa) as well "El Baquine De Angelitos Negros" this one is Jazz

Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound 5 as well Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound X ( 10) "El Progreso"

Charlie Palmieri ....."El Gigante Del Teclado"

Allegre All Stars ( Charlie Palmieri) .... "Lost And Found"

"Sabu's Jazz Espagnole" under Sabu but Louie Ramirez was the man behind it all.

Henry Fiol ...."Fe Esperanza Y Caridad"  (Sar)

Fernando Lavoy Y Los Soneros.....self titled. (Sar)

Bobby Valentin....."Soy Boricua"

Hector Lavoe....."La Voz"

Ruben Blades 'Siembra" ( Salsa) but highly recommended is his 1998 one "La Rosa De Los Vientos" Panama and folkloric  influenced not Salsa as well his  following "Tiempos"

Tipica 73....."Charangueando Con La Tipica 73"   One of the best Charanga albums out there.

Monguito .... "Lo Mejor De Monguito" I actually prefer his Sar recordings to the ones he did with Fania and if you can find it his "From Africa To Cuba" album on Sacodisc get it.

Pancho Sanchez "Latin Soul" ( Live)

The Big 3 Palladium Orchstra "Live At The Blue Note"  Tito Rodriguez, Machito and Tito Puentes sons actually do their fathers music. Sounds a bit wary but its wonderful.

Jimmy Bosch "Salsa Dura"  Full on Jazz and Salsa His prior "Soneando Trombon" just as good

Jack Costanzo ....."Back From Havana"

There are many of the current ones like Oscar D'leon, Victor Manuelle etc but my favourite of them all is Gilberto Santa Rosa and his 1997 album "De Corazon" and it was great. Known for his Boleros as well but not a one on this.

Don Perignon presenta Orquesta Puertorriquena "20 Aniversario" but his others are all good as well

Cubanoson....."Recordando a Cuba" still going in New York today

Last but not least the Africans

Laba Sosseh self titled on Sar Productions

Nicholas Menheim & Le Super Sabador........"Commandante Che Guevara"  PAM Label 209

Africando Vol 1 "Trovador" or the next Vol 2 "Tierra Tradicional"

The African ones are Cuban based and esp Menheim's

Sar label  recordings are more Cuban as well over Fania

One note, they are not releasing the quantity anymore of this type of music and as you are most likely aware Reggaeton, Pop and Mexican make up the majority of Latin releases today.

Happy hunting and lots of luck finding them.

Incredible, you gave me a ton of material. Many thanks to both of you guys.
I'm looking forward to find some time and get back here for feed-backs!

By the way, I know Ray Barretto "Acid", and that one is super, I really like it. Thank you again :)

P.S.: I was wondering if it were sensible to dig into the story of Fania Records (which is by the way the label of Barretto's "Acid" album). I noticed you actually haven't mentioned the Fania All Stars band, the guys behind the label.

Yes dig in, the label was founded By Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci in 1964.

With the Fania All Stars I preferred the Live ones with The Red Garter or Yankee Stadium ( 2 Volumes) being my faves. There was a great double cd compilation "The Best Of Fania All Stars" from the Charly label which I have. For some reason I could never get into their studio albums. You may love them though so give it a shot. We all have our preferences with music.

Matt, thanks again. I'm enthusiastic with the music you gave me.
Still I'm hoping for something more contemporary... something which isn't just all about traditional salsa music; I'm still looking for something more "fusion", and by fusion I mean with a fresh sound of our days, but with a strong root in traditional salsa rythms. Not tortuous, like most of the world music-influenced jazz of our time. Simply some good jam sessions, do you know something alike?

And by the way, instead of opening a new thread, I'd like to ask here if you know some brazillian music.

Thanks again guys
