I have seen a lot of love for Hiromi on this site and even over at PA so it's time she got her own appreciation thread. I love her music!

Her new (trio) album is another interesting one. Still don't have final opinion, but I really like the combination of Hiromi's jazz-rooted piano and rockin rhythm section (especially drummer Simon Phillips)Smile

Another Hiromi fan here.

That girl deserves all the attention she can get, and more!

My bro first introduced me to her by showing me some "show-off" videos, she stunned me but wasn't really that keen until I heard 'Time Difference' and 'Time Out', I even bought a physical copy which cost me quite a lot.

I still need to get most of her discography.

I want to get Spiral next (after hearing Return of Kung-Fu Champion), since I already have Another Mind, Brain, and Time Control, then go from there. Everything Ive heard from her is quality

Hiromi love yes!
One of my favorite musicians and certainly my favorite pianist. My favorite album of hers is Time Control, but they're all really solid. I saw her play solo this past November, her energy is infectious.

Yea, if you decide to check anything out, try her Sonicbloom stuff.

The album "Time Control" is my favorite, and probably her best. It's also a fan favorite on this site.

I ran into her completely by mistake when it suddenly occurred to me that a jazz version of Debussy's Claire de Lune would probably be fantastic and I decided to check the internet to see if one already existed. I was right - it is fantastic. I've listened to that one over and over again, but that's all I know of her. Any suggestions for where to start?

A lot of people here, including me, was enjoying her album Time Control a lot earlier this year. I think it's her best and it's like Classic Fusion.

On another note, I'm ordering her new album Voice tonight; so I'll finally be hearing that one soon Big smile

It is a singer known to well in Japan, and Akiko Yano is a piano player. Anyway, I do not know whether musicality of Yano Akiko is accepted by an overseas music fan. However, I submit reference materials for all Hiromi fans.

Of course this album is not name of Hiromi. However, the fan of Hiromi can learn this, too.

^ How is that Get Together album?

Ive gotten into Beyond Standard, which I thought would be another run-of-the-mill jazz covers album, but no; it is like its own album. It even starts off with original material, which is basically a continuation of her previous album Time Control, starting off with the last track (not counting the bonus track) "Time's Up" and extending the piece into a fuller piece of music. Wonderful.

In this duo album, most of the original music of Akiko Yano is really collected as a survey by me. The music of the video which I put is not recorded in the album. Probably they might play a performance. However, the performance of Hiromi in particular is splendid. I really hear Hiromi to let a melody of the music of Hiromi oneself come up.

Postscript

I do not yet get this album.

Long time fan of Hiromi, been following her since Brain was released--I picked it up on a whim, noting Anthony Jackson had some bass credits on it--I buy pretty much anythin AJ is on--and I've seen her multiple times since then.   Great, talent, great composer, and fierce improvisor.   Also an obvious student of the tradition, and she has an infectious love of all types of jazz, going back to stride piano, etc.

Surely.Smile She was affected by Oscar Peterson, but recommended "Wired" of Jeff Beck as other albums.

Probably I suppose that she studied the performance of Jan Hammer. It may be reflected by her performance.

OK, this thread had alerted me about Hiromi'sc existence about one year ago, but I finally got a chance to check her instrumental Voice album...
First (surprising) track is quite prog and leaves little to jazz (further prog credential being drummer Siomon Phillips), but by the third track, it's evident that we're with a good modern jazz album.
Thanks for the tip, guys

If you ever decide to further your Hiromi collection, I recommend 2 albums.

Time Control. Probably her best album, and this one is more in the jazz-rock vein. Lots of great keyboard sounds, and Dave Fuze on guitar, one of the most creative guitarists around. The album after this, Beyond Standard, is a great companion album to Time Control.

Another Mind. Her first album. This album treads the line between fusion and classically-influenced jazz (but not third stream). Real melodic sound, lots of piano, and a very consistent listen.

To be honest, I like all her albums, and they all have a lot to offer. Her playing is best described as "beautiful", sort of like when Chick Corea or Herbie Hancock play real beautiful lines.

Speaking of which, I haven't really thrown any of her albums on recently. I'll have to remedy that. Cool

Coming to the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. 3 gigs, if I remember right,  1 solo, 1 trio and another with the trio at Bennnets Lane Jazz Club.  I would go for the trio myself.

One interesting thought

Do you think the ones that head to the solo concert are predominately Classical music inclined and the trio fans more straight Jazz and Contempary music inclined?

Not that this means anything really but, just a thought.

I'm not sure, I would imagine her biggest fans might want to hear her solo, while jazz fans in general might go more for the trio.
I'm thinking as for myself, I would have to be very much into a piano player to prefer them solo. Herbie or Cecil Taylor are two pianists who I might want to hear solo. Actually I've already heard Taylor solo.

I saw her trio in Melbourne will consist of Simon Phillips and bassist Anthony Jackson (one time Corea'scollaborator among others) - that means trio's music will be close to her last album (read- energetic fusion). Her solo music is usually contemporary jazz (more muscular version of Keith Jarrett's non-third stream solo works)

It does look good the trio for her Slava. Still would go to the club not the concert hall though. Bet you it swings more at the club with audience particapation. Besides you can have a drink.

I am off to see Lonnie Smith myself. There are heaps of good ones at the festival but with work and already hardly being there on weekends due to the football season about to start here. Having to take my wife out and spend time with her as well. "I need a clone who I can send to do my job for me", that would solve it.

I would have been worried that it could have been the opposite. Was it all Avante or did he mix stuff up? I cannot get my wife to go to Jazz concerts usually unless it's George Benson. That New Orleans Jazz Festival. I have to get there one day.

Taylor's concert was an endless assault on the piano without break, ha ha. You just float with it. Beer and have some beer first.
I hear the New Orleans Jazz Festival has become too big and crowded and there seems to be much less actual jazz too.

Tough choice between Aziza's trio or solo set, I'd probably try to see both. I do like solo piano performances. Pretty annoyed that I won't be able to make it however.

I have never met a more confident player either!  I don't think the term 'nervous' is even in her vocabulary!  I saw her at a solo piano concert and before playing one of her tunes she told the audience to "fasten your seatbelt"!  Sure enough, she ripped!  Totally awesome!

So it seems that Hiromi's new album is going to be released September 11, 2012 in Japan, and won't be released in Europe until October 2, 2012, or the US until March 5, 2013. If you want it this month, and you don't live in Japan, you'll have to order an import, upwards of $50 or more. This is what happened when Voice was released, right? Because I remember not buying it right away for a similar reason.

After several first spins "Move" sounds as strong Hiromi's fusion album - very muscular, full of energy and quite melodic. No big changes comparing with her best previous works, but for fans of her music I expect this album will take a place between her best releases

Fortunately I have  friends running CD shop (jazz+prog) with huge catalog, I can borrow almost everything. And they have big list of Japanese releases - I love Japanese versions of any albums, as rule their remix is very soft and acoustic, live recordings are excellent . Japanese releases are pricey to buy, but for albums you're sure you want to have it in your collection it usually pays.

Hiromi's album I listen is Japanese one, great dynamic range, price for retail is kind of 40 USD or more  I think

If you haven't picked up Hiromi's newest album "Move" yet, well, you better go get it. It's one fantastic album, might be better than "Voice". It's a very proggy album, and contains some of her best written material as far as I'm concerned.
