I'm just wondering if Jazz Related Metal should be a subgenre here since there are plenty of extreme metal bands that have married their talents with jazz. Some are already on here like Shining, Panzerballet, Zu etc but some extreme metal bands are missing from here
For exampe: Atheist was a pioneer in the fusion of death metal and jazz The album they started the jazz elements: another artist i can think of on the spot is FREDERIK THORDENDAL of Messhugah His one solo album has many jazz elements If these bands are acceptible for addition then i'll throw some more your way Personally i think jazz related metal should be a sub here What say you? Sorry to make you listen to this stuff if you're not a fan :P Edited by siLLy puPPy - 16 Sep 2016 at 6:53am |

We added Thordendal, but there isn't one speck of jazz on the Atheist album.
We won't be adding any more genres. Any form of rock, whether its metal, punk, post-punk, classic, indie, alternative, southern, garage, kraut, psychedelic, space, post, math, shoe-gaze, new wave, no wave, nu-metal, sludge, grunge, doom, death, despair, thrash, prog, hardcore, glam, yacht etc, will always go in jazz-related rock. As for any other bands, its okay to spend some time pursuing jazz-related bands, but the main emphasis of our work is pointed towards the thousands of artists that play jazz music that we still haven't added.

Atheist doesn't have any jazz instrumentation per se but the jazz is wrapped up in the compositions themselves in terms of time signatures and syncopated death metal antics. Their are jazz techniques used in tone and timbre dynamics as well. On some albums they break into latin jazz without metal. Of course, they are first and foremost a tech death metal band.
Yeah, i was thinking you'd probably say that as not to take the focus away from the mission of the site and all. Another band on that list that would surely qualify as jazz related rock is Epel Duath |

Instrumentation, time signatures, tones etc aren't things that uniquely define jazz.
At its very core, the two basic things that define jazz as different from other forms of music are, ensemble improvisation and propulsive syncopated rhythms. Atheist, although a very talented band playing very complicated music, didn't have any of those two things, the other two bands had hints of those two elements here and there.

Thanks guys! BTW how do you know there are 1000s of bands that play jazz that haven't been added? Is there a list? WHen i come across something on Rate Your Music or wherever i always check it out here and see if it's here. I most of the time find it already here so i can't imagine thousands of bands that are fenced out still :P Of course, there's always a million minor bands out there. Terence Brewer for example is here but not on RYM!

So does that exclude Big Band jazz with written notation?

^ Of course not, most big band charts are going to have room for improv anyway, for instance the piano player will need to know how to comp, not every note will be written out, plus there will be solos, the bass player will need to know how to walk etc.
I suppose if every single note was written out, then you would be talking about some sort of 3rd stream type piece, a mix of concert hall music and jazz.

I thought I remember reading about a couple bandleaders who insisted on writing out material. Perhaps not everything, but without room for improv solos.
Then again, folk music is also often improvised. I hadn't really thought about third stream, but I'd be remiss if it all was dismissed as non-jazz. That doesn't really advance us any further, though. I always said jazz is like the infamous porn ruling: you know when you hear it. Figuring out where it ends and pop standards begins (or soul in the 60s) is very muddy.

There are always gray areas, which is a good thing.
The reason we have such a big 'jazz related' section is so that we can include all those gray areas and music that is similar to jazz. We try to take a big tent approach to the world of jazz and present everything and let others decide what they are looking for in jazz or jazz influenced music.
