Hey all.
Through a number of strange coincidences, I've started trying to learn the clarinet (as a hobby, not really serious). Naturally, I'm wondering if there's any good jazz clarinetists I can find. At the same time, I'm not at all looking for the swing greats, of which I know there are many, but I'm really not interested in that right now. Maybe in the future. But for now, I'm looking for more straight ahead stuff, or bop-esque stuff, modern or not. I normally dig stuff that is pretty intense instead of calmer things. I'm not too aware of a lot of artists, so do you guys have any recommendations for me?

It is in the section of Bop. |

I'll get back to you about that, I need to visit my neighbor right now, but off the top of my head I'm thinking David Murray.

Thanks folks, I'll check them both out.
I should also mention that I'm a bit less interested in bass clarinet, which I realize may be more common, unfortunately. |

Anyway, yeah, DeFranco plays Bop and Murray is an old school Avant-garde player, but a lot of those older AG musicians play just about anything these days from Dixieland to Hard Bop or Funk etc. He also plays sax.
Some other AG clarinetists include Don Byron and John Carter.

Can't really think of to many non swing clarinetists, pretty much what's been mentioned is it.

Hi.
I don't really know a non-swing clarinetist whose entire discography I could recommend. I think most clarinetists in jazz are saxophone players who sometimes play clarinet, too. You might like the live album "Berlin Djungle" by "Peter Brötzmann Clarinet Project", though. That's my ultimate clarinet album in jazz. It has as much as 5 clarinets at a time (+ one bass clarinet and mouthpieces). I think of it as avantgarde, it's definitely not swing . I think all people interested in clarinet should hear this at least once: http://www.jazzmusicarchives.com/peter-brotzmann--berlin-djungle%28live%29.aspx (Unfortunately I can't find a youtube clip. If you're ok with mp3 at all, I know this one is very cheap on emusic, as it has only two tracks.) |

Fascinating. Thanks, folks. I realize I originally started the topic months ago, but I still check in/lurk on these forums from time to time.
