Here’s a riddle: Which master percussionist will release a highly anticipated album on March 19? We’ll give you a hint. He’s one of the most acclaimed Latin jazz artists performing today, with a formidable résumé that includes performances with Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, John Scofield and Wynton Marsalis.

That’s right. It’s Pedrito Martinez, whose new album Acertijos (Riddles) promises to deliver a world of grooves through nine new compositions that showcase his astounding rhythmic versatility and commanding voice. Bringing Martinez’s vision into focus are a number of high-profile guests, including blues guitar legend Eric Clapton, who appears on three tracks. His soul-stirring acoustic guitar can be heard on the album’s opener, “Aumba.”

Clapton has been a close friend and admirer of Martinez since 2009, when the guitarist first heard him perform at the famous New York City Cuban restaurant Guantanamera. The two have been collaborating ever since, with Martinez appearing at Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2019. For Acertijos, Martinez flew to London to record a new version of Clapton’s well-known song “My Father’s Eyes.” Re-interpreted in Spanish as “Los Ojos de Mi Padre,” the song features both men in a stunning vocal duet. Additional guest appearances on the album include saxophonists Miguel Zenon and David Sanchez, trumpeters Sean Jones and Etienne Charles, and vocalist Isaac Delgado Jr. and Mitchell Delgado, among many others.

In a press statement, Martinez called Acertijos “a compilation of emotions … and the story of my life living in New York and Cuba.” A vocalist and percussionist with a wide array of styles within his grasp, Martinez relocated to New York City from his native Havana in 1998. He was a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Afro-Beat band Yerba Buena, recording two albums with the group, including genre-defying President Alien featuring Roy Hargrove and Meshell Ndegeocello. His playing was also featured in the films Calle 54 (2000) and Chico and Rita (2010).

In 2005, Martinez formed the Pedrito Martinez Group, whose self-titled debut album was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in 2013. His 2016 follow-up album, Habana Dreams, was recorded largely in Cuba, with guests including Ruben Blades and Angelique Kidjo.

Martinez is widely considered one of the world’s foremost purveyors of Cuban folk music. With Acertijos, he is realizing a sound that taps into the spirits of his homeland, and a few from his new home, too. He says: “The spirits I accumulated when I was living in Cuba, and all the spirits I accumulated here [in the US]. They put me on my way.”

Acertijos will drop March 19, 2021, and will be available on all digital platforms with a limited vinyl edition available on Immediate Family Records.

Vijay Iyer Trio, “Children of Flint”

“Children of Flint” is the first track from pianist Vijay Iyer’s upcoming second trio album on ECM, Uneasy, featuring bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Written by Vijay in 2019, the song is dedicated to children hailing from Flint, a town located near Detroit in Michigan. Vijay emphasizes the importance of the composition’s tragic background: “Through gross negligence and systematic racism, the entire town’s drinking water supply was poisoned with lead. Thousands of children in that town, who are mostly African American, have been exposed to unsafe levels of lead, leading to widespread health issues, chronic illnesses and learning disabilities. This piece is dedicated to those children.” Uneasy is due out on April 9.

JULIAN LAGE TRIO ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM, SQUINT

It’s Lage’s debut on Blue Note Records.

Julien Lage

Julian Lage. Image: Nathan West / Press

Jazz guitarist Julian Lage has announced a new album by the Julian Lage trio, entitled Squint. The album is Lage’s first on legendary jazz label Blue Note Records, and is set to arrive on 11 June.

In a statement about the release and the new label, Lage said: “I absolutely love improvised music, and I’ve always been fascinated by singer-songwriter music. For me, the jazz that came out of Blue Note always engaged both sides of that. It had incredible improvisational vocabularies and performances, but when I think of albums from Grant Green’s Idle Moments to Joe Henderson’s Inner Urge to McCoy Tyner’s Time For Tyner with Bobby Hutcherson – all these records that I love so much also have such great songs.”

He explained how that influenced the performances on Squint, saying: “I felt like this was an opportunity to present new music born out of the Blue Note tradition as I’ve interpreted it.”

Alongside Lage, the trio consists of bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King. Squint’s first single, Saint Rose, has arrived alongside the announcement – you can hear it below.

Lage recently collaborated with Collings on a new signature guitar model – his first electric with the brand. It features Ron Ellis Ellisonic pickups, a choice inspired by Lage’s affinity for vintage Dynasonic single-coils, and their dynamic, lively response.

Gilles Peterson and Bluey's new album set for release

Broadcaster, DJ and label boss Gilles Peterson and the widely lauded Brit-funk pioneer Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick have announced a new album - Aspects.

Aspects, which will be released under the pairs group STR4TA, aims to tap into the early-1980s Brit-funk scene. It was through Maunick’s band, Incognito – one of the essential groups of an oft-overlooked, vital pocket of Black British musical history – that they first connected. On Aspects, he and Peterson revisit that important period and the spirit that guided it: self-taught, DIY vitality, raucous energy built on live performance. which united the pair.

Aspects is the first material that Bluey and Peterson have released together in over a decade.

“The idea of the project was to capture that raw, moment to moment sound,” Maunick says, drawing a contrast to the touches of refinement he and his peers have acquired in the years since.

In its early days, the Brit-funk sound – and the London jazz-funk milieu it grew out of – was rooted in raucous live shows, rivalling those of the punk bands in that same period. Recalling his role in the process, Peterson says he was the one making sure things didn’t get too polished. “I was there at the back, telling them, no, leave it like that, cut it there, or just use that first take,” he says.

STR4TA - 'Vision 9'

STR4TA's Aspects will be released through Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings March 26 2021 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digital download.

The singles 'Vision 9', 'Rhythm in Your Mind' and 'Aspects' are out now.

The Music That Made Me

Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick featured as part of our landmark series, The Music That Made Me. The series has also featured** Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kurt Elling, Norah Jones, Gregory Porter, Jamie Cullum and George Benson.
