New Release Round-up 6th June 2025

Starting our new releases this week with some sounds from Brazil, where Azymuth’s jazz-funk sound makes a return with new members in their latest album Marca Passo. Trumpeter Volker Goetze continues his musical blend of West African music with jazz in Sargal, playing alongside Senegalese kora player Ali Boulo Santo Cissoko and Mino Cinélu on percussion, and drummer Curtis Nowosad presents his album promoting self-healing in I Am Doing My Best, combining vocals and electric guitar in his original compositions. Finally, award-winning pianist Isaiah J. Thompson makes his Mack Avenue debut in The Book of Isaiah: Modern Jazz Ministry, a collection of tracks that explore spiritualism and humanity, and Jamiroquai's keyboardist Matt Johnson releases his second cosmic jazz and funk crossover album Warrior Princess

Having been the recipient of the 2023 American Piano Awards and Steinway Artist, as well as working alongside names such as Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride and John Pizzarelli, pianist Isaiah J. Thompson makes his Mack Avenue Records debut with The Book of Isaiah: Modern Jazz Ministry. Thompson also recruits the talents of American pianist Cyrus Chestnut across the eight tracks, putting spiritual feeling at the forefront of his musical exploration of faith, race, and humanity.

Available Format: CD

Sargal

Ali Boulo Santo Cissoko, Volker Goetze, Mino Cinelu

In a dynamic collaboration between trumpeter Volker Goetze, Senegalese kora master Ali Boulo Santo Cissoko, and percussionist Mino Cinélu, Sargal is a blend of West African traditions with jazz. Recorded in France in 2021, the album captures the powerful chemistry that led to the formation of their acclaimed trio, Flamenkora. With themes of gratitude and resilience, the music offers both laid-back and uplifting grooves, in a deeply expressive fusion of musical traditions.

I Am Doing My Best

Curtis Nowosad

I Am Doing My Best is the fourth album from JUNO-nominated jazz drummer Curtis Nowosad, presented by La Reserve Records. Co-produced with Joey Landreth and featuring additional guests Joanna Majoko and Andrew Renfroe, the album delves deeply into personal reflection. With themes of healing, self-compassion, and emotional growth, this album invites listeners to embrace change, align with their values, and help create a more compassionate world.

Warrior Princess

Matt Johnson

Following a celebrated career as the keyboardist and co-writer for Jamiroquai, Matt Johnson steps into the spotlight with his second solo album, Warrior Princess. Building on decades of experience shaping the sounds of modern acid jazz, Johnson crafts an album that captures sounds of 70s funk and cosmic jazz, and was inspired by Greta Thunberg’s resilience and perseverance when undertaking her transatlantic voyage.

Marca Passo

Azymuth

Celebrating fifty years since their 1975 debut, Azymuth’s Marca Passo continues the band’s blend of Brazilian jazz-funk and samba. Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, it honors the legacy of late founding members Ivan Conti and Jose Roberto Bertrami, with original bassist Alex Malheiros now joined by Kiko Continentino and newcomer Renato Massa. True to their origins, Azymuth continues to evolve their signature sound, rooted in Brazil’s MPB scene and enriched by global influences.
