New Release Round-Up - 31st January 2025

As we come to the end of January, there are musical journeys aplenty in this week’s round up. Ocean-bound travel is the focus for saxophonist and composer Loek van den Berg in Seafarer, a meeting of Brazil and Cuba results in new album The Flight by the Mani Padme Trio, and Misha Mullov-Abbado gives a musical tour of London’s Brixton in the vibrant and colourful Effra. Finally, to round off the month, established pianist Julia Hülsmann and her quartet make their return with Under the Surface, and Pierre Blanchard gives movie classics a dose of gypsy jazz charm alongside the Metropole Orkest in Movies and Gypsies

Loek van den Berg takes to the waves with his ensemble in Seafarer. Eight new compositions by the saxophonist blend jazz with elements of folk and classical music, each one designed to transport the listener on a journey across the ocean. Together, the ensemble captures both the quiet ebb and flow of the waves, as well as the depth and erratic nature of the sea.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Blending the musical styles of both Brazil and Cuba, the Mani Padme Trio come together again for their next album The Flight. Not limiting themselves to the expectations of Latin Jazz, the trio (who have played together for over 20 years) create an effortless blend together to craft their own musical sound.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Dedicating this album to the London neighbourhood of Brixton, Misha Mullov-Abbado releases his album of eight original compositions in Effra. Arranged for the bassist’s sextet, with the compositions written for these specific performers, each track demonstrates the effortless and delightful sound of an ensemble that has played together for over a decade. Much like Brixton itself, there is a mixture of sounds and influences to capture the ear of any jazz fan.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

ECM’s Julia Hülsmann returns with her quartet in tow in Under the Surface. Lyrically driven, Hülsmann brings new original compositions, some of which feature an additional member to the ensemble in the form of Norwegian trumpeter, Hildegunn Øiseth. This quartet/quintet setup, with Hülsmann’s piano at the heart, is the newest addition to the her already impressive ECM catalogue.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

French jazz violinist, Pierre Blanchard, tackles some of the most well known tunes from the screen in Movies and Gypsies. Playing alongside the Metropole Orkest, each track is given a twist with his gypsy jazz sound. Using improvisation and innovative arrangements (all done himself), Blanchard has taken the likes of “Singin’ in the Rain” and “The Godfather”, and has created these pieces into something new.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV
