This week we turn our ears toward a varied batch of new releases, starting with Duos by Paul Dunmall and Kevin Figes, which focuses on spontaneous saxophone improvisation, while BADBADNOTGOOD offer a genre-blending experience with infectious rhythms that push boundaries. Glen Manby and the John Gibbon Trio pay nostalgic tribute to classic standards, and Alvorada's Faz Tempo captures the essence of vibrant Brazilian music, infusing it with a contemporary twist. Meanwhile, Stefan Schöler’s Folklore redefines traditional music concepts, challenging listeners to reconsider what folk music can be, and Danilo Pérez's collaboration with the Bohuslän Big Band merges multiple cultural influences, resulting in a sound overbrimming with invention. Lastly, Sphere's Complete Live At Umbria Jazz showcases an engaging live performance by the supergroup.

Duos

Paul Dunmall & Kevin Figes

Duos brings two distinct voices in jazz improvisation together for the first time: the legendary Paul Dunmall and the ever-creative Kevin Figes. This recording captures ten pieces entirely born in the moment, without any written themes or motifs. Using an array of instruments - from saxophones to clarinets and flutes - the duo crafts raw, spontaneous soundscapes that channel the evolution of jazz itself.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Mid Spiral

BADBADNOTGOOD

BADBADNOTGOOD’s Mid Spiral brings together the trio’s three 2024 EPs - ChaosOrder, and Growth - creating a deeply atmospheric collection that navigates jazz, neo-soul, funk, and hip-hop. With an expanded ensemble of collaborators, the album’s layered compositions evoke shifting themes of intensity, introspection, and resilience.

Available Format: CD

When Sunny Gets Blue

Glen Manby & John Gibbon Trio

Glen Manby’s When Sunny Gets Blue, featuring the John Gibbon Trio, offers a refreshing take on classic jazz standards. With highlights like “Windows” and “The Blues Walk,” the album blends lyrical alto saxophone with sensitive backing from pianist Guy Shotton, bassist Olly Blanchflower, and drummer John Gibbon, creating an intimate yet expressive musical journey

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Faz Tempo

Alvorada

Alvorada are an award-winning quintet playing Brazilian instrumental music inspired by the choro tradition. This latest album Faz Tempo is a bold and rich work with intricate arrangements of original compositions. The album includes Brazilian rhythms such as choro, xote, samba, bossa nova and baião, with jazz and improvisation peppering their sound.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Folklore

Stefan Schöler

Stefan Schöler's Folklore redefines the term, blending jazz with folk elements that evoke a collective, cross-generational experience. Rather than traditional folk, Schöler's vision of folklore captures music that unites people across backgrounds. His work dismisses clichés, channeling a dynamic fusion of genres, and aims to create an inclusive musical dialogue

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Lumen

Danilo Pérez & Bohuslän Big Band

Danilo Pérez collaborates with Sweden’s Bohuslän Big Band to blend Pan-American rhythms with a Nordic jazz sound. Rooted in Pérez's Panamanian heritage, the album features lively improvisation and free-flowing melodies. Frafted during the pandemic, the project reflects a shared cultural journey and rich jazz tradition, merging Latin jazz with the Scandinavian influence of the Bohuslän Big Band.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

The Complete Live at Umbria Jazz 2-CD set by supergroup Sphere captures the entire 1986 session, featuring 30 minutes of previously unreleased music. Rediscovered tapes revealed two rare tracks by the quartet of Charlie Rouse, Kenny Barron, Buster Williams, and Ben Riley, expanding the ensemble’s limited recording legacy. The set includes seven tracks, three of which showcase Williams’s compositions, enriching Sphere’s vital, yet sparse discography.

Available Formats: 2 CDs, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV
