new release round-up,Jazz New Release Round-Up - 26th January 2024

by Barney Whittaker

Our final Round-Up of the month sets off with new music from Svante Söderqvist, the Swedish bassist and cellist who leads a well-paced troupe on The Rocket. Following this, Cecilia Lopez & Ingrid Laubrock join forces to deliver an intertwining dialogue of sprawling jazz circuitry with Maromas. By way of Introduktion, the upstarting saxophonist John Nilsson makes our acquaintance while guitarist Mark Solborg simply towers with BABEL. Finally, Espen Berg rises to the challenge of presenting his passion project Water Fabric. All in all, it's a wild ride!

The Rocket

Svante Söderqvist

This bass-led trio have been performing together since 2018, which gives them plenty of time to have gotten under each other’s skin. Their first full album in three years, it explores meaningful themes with a convincing airiness at times reminiscent of Ahmad Jamal. The guest appearances of Tuulikki Bartosik and Klas Lindquist (featuring on accordion and clarinet, respecitvely) come as welcome surprises that tempt the group to head off in newer directions to ones they previously knew. As the old saying goes – it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Maromas

Cecilia Lopez & Ingrid Laubrock

We seriously enjoyed the resourcefully-inspired German saxophonist’s most recent album The Last Quiet Place from last year. So what to expect from her newest release, a duo recording with Argentinian multi-media installation artist Cecilia Lopez? Well, as is often the case with Laubrock, you can forget everything you once thought as she tears up the rulebook yet again. Rarely losing steam, this recording is a confounding distortion of sonic filtrations. Laubrock’s fanfare-like reveille is tempered by Lopez’s electronic processing, with its sharp edges piercing their way through the mix.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC

Introduktion

John Nilsson

This upcoming young sax player from Gothenburg shows he’s already got what it takes on his fresh debut album. With a rip-roaring ensemble of hot Swedish talent to support and uplift him, Nilsson consistently hits the mark when it comes to selecting the right emotional tone to adopt depending on the context. He seems fully aware of the sensitivities of knowing when to hold back – which makes it all the more fun when he and his band inevitably let loose.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

BABEL

Mark Solborg

This ambitious new project from the ILK Music co-founder brings together several of the improvisatory collective’s greatest assets for this humanistic statement. A real conference of the birds, the album calls us to the challenge of connecting beyond our immediate spheres. Where the inclusion of spoken voices in different tongues first grabs our attention, our interest is piqued by the chillingly provocative manner in which the ensemble find their common ground.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Water Fabric

Espen Berg

Last year, the Norwegian’s pianist’s The Hamar Concert cast him in the role of an intricate storyteller. Now, he spins his yarn further with this recording of a piece that first came to light in 2005 (before the premiere of its final incarnation in 2022) which speaks to Berg’s engaging musicality with a multitude of different styles and voices. Blending contemporary classical techniques with subtle hints of jazz seasoning, this fertile suite from the inventive artist makes for an unforgettably compelling inter-genre conversation.
