TATIANA EVA-MARIE - Tatiana Eva-Marie & Terry Waldo : Two at the Most cover

“Tatiana Eva-Marie has consistently delighted audiences with her buoyant style and effervescent personality,

all of which fit firmly into the vintage jazz manouche genre that Django pioneered.” – Will Friedwald

The Great American Songbook has stood the test of time, and its influence on popular music has been felt around the world. That’s what brought the young Swiss-born chanteuse TATIANA EVA-MARIE to New York City, where it all began. Tatiana is now releasing TWO AT THE MOST, a collection of romantic songs from the Great American Songbook presented in an intimate duo setting.

TWO AT THE MOST is Tatiana’s seventh CD as a leader. She was recently included, alongside Cyrille Aimée and Cécile McLorin-Salvant, in a list of rising jazz stars picked by Vanity Fair, and she was named “one of the best young singers around” by the Wall Street Journal. Nicknamed the Gypsy-jazz Warbler by the New York Times, Tatiana’s music is inspired by her French and Balkan heritage, a love for the Parisian art scene era spanning the 1920s to the 60s, and a passion for Gypsy music. But she is also fascinated by New Orleans jazz and has a deep connection to the Great American Songbook.

Tatiana is joined on TWO AT THE MOST by pianist JEREMY CORREN. A mainstay on the New York City jazz scene, he performs regularly at the Blue Note, Smalls Jazz Club, and the Jazz Gallery. He has also performed at the Newport and Chicago Jazz Festivals, and internationally at the Blue Note clubs in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Beijing, as well at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands and the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy, among other international venues.

In 2011, Tatiana decided it was time to go to New York to indulge her passion for American music. Although she had intended to stay for just a year or two, she found a community of like-minded artists from all over the world and has been living there ever since. Tatiana quickly became part of the New York jazz scene and formed a band called Avalon that has become wildly popular, performing in top venues in New York and internationally. They have even become bona fide internet stars with 340,000+ YouTube channel subscribers.

Tatiana’s voice is sweet and warm, the perfect vehicle for this romantic selection of songs. Corren’s accompaniment is a tasteful canvas that gives Tatiana the colors and space over which to paint her song stories. Tatiana opens TWO AT THE MOST with “The End of a Love Affair,” which is dedicated to a friend she spent a lot of time with at a certain bar, sitting around the piano, listening to show tunes. After her friend passed away, she was unable to go back to that bar, and it felt like a love affair had ended. “Penthouse Serenade” is perhaps not as well-known as other GAS songs, but Tatiana was drawn to its tender lyrics.

Although “Fly Me to the Moon” is one of the most widely recorded songs, the verse is rarely sung. Tatiana says, “The song makes a lot more sense when you hear the verse. The lyrics are a bit sappy, but the verse sets

it up nicely with the singer saying he’s not a poet but will try his best to express his feelings. In that context, the song is a sweet and vulnerable ballad.”

She envisions the character in “Sophisticated Lady” as sitting in a bar until closing time, with smeared makeup, nursing a glass of scotch. “I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good” is what the lady would be silently saying to herself. And, of course, “You Go to My Head” is what happens after a few drinks. “The Nearness of You” is a sexy, wistful song that Tatiana says she can’t imagine singing before the sun sets.

Tatiana had sung all of these songs in live shows before coming into the studio except for “You Are Too Beautiful,” which she learned for the recording. Her friend and song aficionado, MARK BUCHAN, recommended it to her. Buchan is a classics professor and not a professional singer, but Tatiana wanted to thank him for all the knowledge about the music that he has shared with her, and wanted to include him on the album, so she gave him space to sing two songs -- ”They’ll Never Believe Me” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.” He performs both songs with heartfelt intimacy.

On TWO AT THE MOST, Tatiana Eva-Marie and Jeremy Corren create a retro feel that would not be out of place in a 1940s nightclub. They play together regularly, and their empathy and mutual respect is palpable.
