TUESDAY’S CHILD
comprises nine captivating compositions written and
performed by veteran reed player ROBERT KYLE and jazz pianist/vocalist
ALYSE KORN. The songs are intimate and lyrical, inspired by
their love of Jazz, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music.
Best known for his warm tone and passionate
interpretations on tenor & soprano sax, and his melodic and
inventive flute work, Kyle is also a composer, arranger and producer.
The Los Angeles native has recorded and performed with top names like
Linda Hopkins, Natalie Cole, Francisco Aguabella,
Guinga, Chico Pinheiro, Seu Jorge, Michael
McDonald, Johnny Mathis, Michael Bolton, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King,
Lou Rawls, and many more. He has also recorded over a dozen CDs as a
leader. L.A. Jazz Scene says, “His years of experience backing
influential blues singers have left their mark on Robert Kyle. His
phrasing is much like that of a strong singer who can connect with
the audience through sheer emotion.” After touring as a drummer with
rock and country bands when he was 18, he picked up the saxophone on
a whim and quickly fell in love. It became his passion, his voice.
And it has taken him all over the world.
Born and raised in Miami, Korn blossomed into a
pianist/keyboardist, vocalist, composer, arranger, and music
educator. She earned a BM in Studio Music and Jazz Performance at the
prestigious Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, and an
MFA in Jazz Piano Performance from CalArts, where she participated in
the World Music Program. Her mentors include David Roitstein, Alan
Broadbent, Mark Levine, Alan Pasqua and Russell Ferrante. Korn has
performed with jazz, Brazilian and Salsa bands, including Ed Calle,
Susie Hansen, Son Mayor, Brazil Brasil: Ana Gazzola and Sonya Santos.
She has performed on television and in theatre productions. She and
Kyle play frequently with Téka and her band, New Bossa.
Their love of Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and American jazz
brought Kyle and Korn together. They first met at California Brazil
Camp where they both continue to study Brazilian music with the
masters.
Kyle says “I’ve made several albums paired with just a
guitar or piano, but this one is special because this one is with
Alyse, and Tuesday’s Child is our child.”
The songs on TUESDAY’S CHILD feature
Kyle and Korn, and they decided to invite some friends: KEVIN
WINARD on drums and percussion, HUSSAIN JIFFRY and AHMET
TURKMENOGLU on bass, and LEONICE SHINNEMAN on tabla. Their
talent and creativity enriched the music.
The music on TUESDAY’S CHILD is warm and
inviting. As Korn says, “There’s a lot of turmoil in the world today,
and we hope that when people listen to our music, they will feel the
peace that we feel when we play it.”
The album opens with Korn’s tune “Gratitude.” The
composition features ethereal vocals by Korn, who wrote it while at
the Krishnamurti Retreat in Ojai, California. The music reflects the
atmosphere of the retreat, where people connect with nature. “What
If,” composed by Kyle, has a Brazilian vibe. It features Kyle on
flute playing the melody and improvising along with Korn’s soulful
piano playing and vocalese.
“Your Light” is a romantic ballad that Kyle wrote to
capture the grace, kindness, and passion he finds in his partnership
with Korn. The song features Kyle’s tender tenor saxophone. Korn
wrote “Distance Between Us” after she left her family on the East
Coast and came out west. “Tuesday’s Child” is another tune Kyle wrote
for Korn. The name refers to the fact that they were both born on a
Tuesday. Coming from Florida and spending some time in the colder
California mountains, winter was a new experience for Korn, who
composed “Winter,” a dark and moody piece.
Kyle wrote “Blue Jack” for his favorite uncle. The
tune came to him as he was driving down the highway and had to pull
over to hum the melody into his phone. Turkmenoglu’s bass adds a rich
sound and deep swing to this bluesy tune. Uncle Jack’s kids are
featured on finger snaps. Kyle dedicates “Vivian’s Danzón” to his
youngest sister. Written in the Cuban Danzón style, the song features
hard-grooving Jiffry on baby bass, which is often used in Afro-Cuban
music. Korn sounds right at home in this style, which she grew up
hearing in Miami.
The last song features Shinneman on tabla. Composed by
Kyle, the song is named for an acquaintance from a Yoga class. One
morning, Ruby told Kyle that she dreamt she had given him her
1926 Knabe grand piano that was abandoned in a
warehouse. She gifted him the beautiful piano, and the first song
that he wrote on it, “Ruby’s Dream,” closes the album.
The music on TUESDAY’S CHILD is eloquent
and subtle. Its polyrhythms and elegant harmonies draw you in gently
to its wistful melodies. Robert Kyle has a distinguished recording
career, and TUESDAY’S CHILD is a stellar addition to
his roster of captivating albums. Alyse Korn is an experienced
pianist who possesses a warm, buttery voice. TUESDAY’S CHILD should
give audiences the opportunity to hear her sensitive piano
accompaniments and improvisations. Together, they have created an
inviting collection of compelling compositions.
