Great review. I am big fan of Dexter's. Up to his late seventies albums, almost all of his albums are very enjoyable to me.
I love his European period, where he recorded tons of albums for SteepleChase. His most famous European album, must be Our Man in Paris wich is also essential hard-bop, if you ask me. In his later years his playing got slower and slower, dragging the music, and it becomes more and more tedious to listen to. Lately there was a new release of a 1978-recording where you can hear Dex on his most mellow. I have it downstairs, so I cannot remember the title now. As for 'Go', you just gotta love 'Cheesecake' wich is a great song and very upbeat and uplifting. If I have the time today, I will play it loud. |
