Freddie Redd has died. He was 92. WBGO report that the pianist died in Baltimore citing an announcement by Redd's grandson Leslie Clarke who had earlier announced Redd's passing on social media. Redd, always a very cult name among jazz fans particularly beyond the US, in the early-1960s was renowned for composing the music for Jack Gelber's hard hitting drugs-themed Broadway play The Connection. After US army service in the late-1940s Redd recorded with Tiny Grimes among others and made his debut as a leader in the mid-1950s later touring in Europe with Ernestine Anderson. Also a stage actor he performed in the play that went on to be further produced in London and Paris. Redd's Blue Note albums all dating back to the 1960s are The Music from The Connection, Shades of Redd and Redd's Blues.
