I've been noticing for a while now, how many piano trios we have in our Contemporary section. I was wondering if some of you could help me get a little organized on which ones are the most important, which ones are the most popular, influential etc.
I've listened to a lot of these artists, and have been impressed with a lot of them, but after a while some of the names just run together.
In general, an open conversation about piano trios that fall into the Contemporary tag, or ocassionally the post bop, nu jazz or other tags

Trying to classify European contemporary jazz trios I could devide them into two main streams.
More significant (and influential) are Swedish EST clones or influenced (since EST were absolute supergroup in that style at their time). This stream is dominated around Nordic countries, Germany,Poland and in part UK. Sound names are (em)  (wollny schaefer kruse) (Germany), Germany -based Tingwall Trio, Marcin Wasilewski Trio (Poland), Phronesis (UK),Bobo Stenson Trio (Sweden) . This kind of music are usually concentrated around German ECM and ACT labels and some domestic Scandinavian labels.

The other stream is French and Southern European trios, as rule not influenced by "Nordic sound" and representing more traditional post-bop rooted music, sometimes with nu jazz traces

I think that Slava almost explained the recommendation about the piano trio.

The definition about the PF contemporary which we have will be perfect. However, I think the words called the contemporary to have possibilities to often make a genre vague.

As a personal opinion. If I interpret contemporary jazz, it thinks that music such as Pete Rugulo and Werner Muller is basic. And I think that I may be OK even if the piano trio to play an active part belongs to post bop recently.

I do not think that a piano trio playing an active part has only contemporary recently. In the past, I think Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea to have done it as a method of the expression. Probably the atmosphere may be handed down to a listener because European jazz is introduced and has begun to be colonized.

My opinion may be wrong.

EST is indeed THE leading name in contemporary jazz. IMHO other significant names beside the already mentioned ones are  :
Tord Gustavsen, Nik Bartsch,
Not always playing ih a trio format but for sure belonging to the same category at least with some of his music is Bugge Wesseltoft
Let's not forget  US with at least two leading names : |The Bad Plus  and  Brad Mehldau  with Vijay Iver  rising fast

I think the problem with a lot of the fusion music is that it's extremely predictable, it's a rock rhythm and the solos all play the same stuff and they play it over and over again ...

Thanks for the input everyone. Two other Contemporary pianists who got my attention over the last year are Robert Glasper and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Yes, Vijay Iyer is really one of brightest new generation  contemporary pianist just not so much realated with classic piano trio format. Still his trio albums are between best sub-genre albums I think ( his other works cover more world fusion or   more advanced jazz )

Martin Tingvall (Tingvall Trio) is another pianist who is introducing a new more high energy style of Contemporary Jazz.

Does anybody know this one?

We lay on our backs, looking at the ceiling and wondering what God had wrought when He made life so sad.
