Steve is a great guitar player who is capable of many styles including the ones you suggested. Let me check what the main output of his solo albums centers around.

I think we'll pass on Steve for now, he could be a jazz rocker if he wanted too, but the majority of his solo work tends to center around mainstream rock.

The opinion of John might be all as the result though I recalled this.

I agree with John there, as much as I know Lukather's solo and collaborations work, what he plays is mostly quality instrumental rock.

El Grupo should be added under Jazz-Related Rock, I think. That remains the closest to fusion project I heard SL do.

If you go through his solo albums over the years you get a lot of really mainstream pop/rock with generic vocals,
Its a shame because he is an incredibly talented guitar player.

Hmm, I remember that at some point back in time all the El Grupo album was streaming on YouTube, but I can't find it anymore, just some cover numbers:
El Grupo is a jazz fusion band founded by session musician and Toto guitarist Steve Lukather. The band also features Steve Weingart on keyboards, Oskar Cartaya on bass, and Joey Heredia on drums. The band primarily tours jazz clubs in the United States and Europe and is known for highly improvisational sets that vary widely from show to show. El Grupo recorded one album, in 2005, entitled El Grupo Live. http://www.amazon.com/Live-El-Grupo/dp/B000QQZ5F8/ref=sr_1_1_digr?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1302348839&sr=1-1 |

Possibly I'm too critical, but above samples sound as instrumental rock for me
There are some short examples of almost every song from Al Grupo only (live) album, few samples are possibly close to fusion, but in whole I see this album as more instrumental rock release: In my best - JR related (not sure), but really no way classic fusion. I do not think that Slava means the criticism. We are convinced that the quality of the site can be maintained by discussing music in recognition and the borderline.

Yes, I didn't find on YT any of the pieces that were more fusion-ish. I'll have to dig up the album (if I still have it) and listen to it and see if it's actually as fusion-ish as I remember it. |

I'm going to add El Grupo to JR/Rock, they are very close to fusion. I' found more samples to listen to.

Cool, and good to know my memory and discernment are not disposable... yet.
