That play on words would never be caught here, where Tony is short for Antonio and Tom is short for Thomas.

Actually it's a play on words since Tom may be a nickname for Antonio but also means "tune".

In the states he is rarely called Tom, always Antonio Carlos, but I notice in Brazil he is usually called Tom.

Definitely reminds me of the 80s, that sort of "world beat" hybrid music was very popular in San Francisco. A little bit of influence from everywhere; reggae, Latin, funk, African etc.
