Jerry Léonide won the 2013 Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition. He started on the piano at 8, but these studies of classical music did not last long. Léonide was quickly drawn to improvised music, and discovered jazz standards with help from his father, a guitarist. He eagerly absorbed every drop of musical knowledge he could glean from more experienced musicians as he performed all over his native Mauritius. At 17, Léonide left the island for Paris in to follow his passion for music. Winning the piano competition at Montreux last year has made it possible for him to record his first record, The Key, released this year. This album is characterized by Mauritian rhythms and a deft jazz touch.
