Pianist Julia Hülsmann is to receive the SWR-Jazzpreis, Germany’s oldest and most prestigious jazz award, the Südwestrundfunk announced yesterday.

The award will be presented to Julia Hülsmann at a special prize winner’s concert at Enjoy Jazz festival in Ludwigsburg in October 2016.

The jury statement says: “Julia Hülsmann has developed a totally unique, sensitive piano language, in which she builds bridges to the worlds of poetry and song in a most natural way. In her imaginative compositions and improvisations she creates exceptional melodies and intense atmospheric moods that give her playing a special poetic touch – a starting point for encounters with kindred musical spirits.”
