Hi everyone,
Can anyone please explain how improvisation may be compatible with an atonal environment, and indicate specific recordings that exemplify this? Thank you all very much!

Our Avant-garde section contains a lot of jazz in which the musicians are playing atonally, here you can find artists, albums and samples:

If you are talking about improvising within a strict 12 tone serial structure, such as music by Schoenberg or Boulez, that is a less common, but does exist. Let me know exactly what you are looking for and I'll see if i can help.

Hi and many thanks for your reply!
For present purposes I am not talking about "strict 12 tone serial structure", although this would certainly be of interest as well :-) I'll look into the link you posted.
Incidentally, Could you please refer me to third-stream music featuring the french horn (apart from Gunther Schuller)?
Many thanks,
Dorit
