The Alternative Guitar Summit has announced its lineup and schedule for 2017. The three-day festival, which focuses on players with inventive approaches to the guitar, includes 30 guitarists in a variety of settings with Nels Cline, Rez Abbasi, Camila Meza and Liberty Ellman among those scheduled to appear.
Performances will take place on March 10, 11 and 15 in NYC with a March 9 concert in Philadelphia. This year’s summit celebrates the music of Pat Metheny and the release of his new songbook containing 150 of his compositions. A live interview with Metheny and book signing will occur prior to the March 10 event.
On Tuesday, March 9, ARS Nova Workshop presents Celebrating Pat Metheny at the Boot & Saddle in Philadelphia. Guitarists Nels Cline, Liberty Ellman, Joel Harrison, Camila Meza, Mike Moreno and Nir Felder are joined by bassists Jorge Roeder and Chico Huff and drummer Gerald Cleaver to perform 12 Metheny compositions in total. Show time is 8:00 p.m.
On Friday, March 10, Alternative Guitar Summit 2017 Celebrates Pat Metheny takes place at Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan. Nels Cline Trio, Liberty Ellman & Miles Okazaki Quartet, Rez Abbasi Trio, Joel Harrison String Choir, Nir Felder Trio, Mike Moreno Trio & Camila Meza will perform 14 Metheny compositions in total. Show time is 7 p.m., with the Pat Metheny interview and book signing event at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, March 11, the Summit presents Solo Voices and Communal Raptures at Nublu in the East Village, NYC. Featured performers include Nels Cline (solo), John Schott Trio, Rafiq Bhatia with Marcus Gilmore & Rahsaan Carter and Go Organic Guitar Orchestra conducted by Adam Rudolph. Show time is 8 p.m.
On Wednesday, March 15, Guitars of Heaven, Guitars of Hell takes place at National Sawdust in Brooklyn. Scheduled performers include Dither Guitar Quartet, guitarist Steve Mackey and percussionist Jason Treuting, the Resophonic Guitar Orchestra and Steven Bernstein with Dave Tronzo and Steve Cardenas. Show time is 7 p.m.
