Where does live jazz sounds best?

Bars? Big concert halls? Outdoors? Small concert halls? Medium concert halls?

Which venues have you been to? Which are good? Which are bad?

Lets discuss everything related to jazz and location! Cool

I saw a jazz band play in the middle of a small park/court in New York City. They had a guitarist, bass and drums, and it was pretty cool.

Never went (or been detered to go) to a jazz concert because of the location. Of course, it doesn't mean the atmosphere and the band tuning to the space doesn't count.

It's been mostly open-air festivals or evening club gigs. The Thing played acoustically at the Philarmonic, they loved it and for a very small concert hall, there was no loss of hearing. Back in '06, E.S.T. played at my Opera House.

I'd put bars last on the list, because you can't have an interesting concert, considerable attendance and limited tables - either the concert isn't that interesting or the place sucks. I do remember such an occasion, but the concert was light, it lasted from 10pm to 2 in the morning, because the artists took three breaks of 45 minutes to drink beer with their friends. I was sitting in the corner, shouting "Hey, I'm waiting here!".

I usually prefer small clubs for jazz.
Some larger venues can do a good job with jazz, such as Slims in San Francisco, but often the sound for amplified acoustic instruments is not good in a larger venue.

From my experience it's easier for jazz to sound good in certain places than it is for rock. I don't think I've ever been to a jazz concert and said to myself "God, the sound sucked" after the end.

That said, I also prefer more intimate venues, like small clubs.

The performance by a small venue might have the enjoyment many for the spectator. It can enjoy the conversation by the sound as one of the charms. It is not a decided set list. The enjoyment might increase if the musician does the call and response near the spectator. In a large venue, there might be a problem of the sound by the place. It might be probably good to enjoy not worrying about anything anyway. However, there might be a habit of researching at the same time as enjoying it if the person who plays a musical instrument listens to live in the hall. Expression of sound. Kinds of musical instruments. Method of momentary arrangement and dynamics. Method of solving chord done during tune. I assume it of enjoy to be one.

I've went to various jazz bars here in Argentina which are very good, both the ambience and the quality of the music.

I've also seen jazz in big concert halls (or medium), say McCoy Tyner last year. It's less intimate obviously, but it's not bad at all.

I like small venues (maybe bars... but they tend to be too noisy) ....
There is this particular one in Caracas (Venezuela) that is quite small (no more than 100 seats), has fantastic acoustics and an amazing piano (the best I've ever seen)... The only problem with it is hat there's a big delay with the feedback which makes it really difficult to play there, improvising there should be even more difficult....
We have lots of bizarre venues where musicians tend to be confused... like this one (the audience is split in half):

There's actually quite an active jazz scene in Caracas and it all revolves around one place: The Juan Sebastian Bar... it is a bar but is focused on the music (I actually saw my very first jazz live performances in there)

I saw Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes about a year ago in a huge venue that had great acoustics and it was phenomenal! (+ I got to greet them at the end and spoke with Chick for a few minutes!)...

The thing with big venues is that the acoustics can mess everything up....
