I bought a compilation of Thelonious Monk songs recently, and I really enjoy his style. Just wondering if anyone knew of any similar artists. It doesn't have to be someone who plays the piano, even--just someone who plays with dissonance, pauses, a slower pace, and just a general against-the-norm attitude.
(The closest I can think of myself is Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The mars Volta. LOL)

In piano playing, writing and overall approach, Sun Ra can be similar sometimes, although Sun Ra also goes a lot further AG at times as well.

As far as older jazz piano players  who use space and unexpected turns, you might try Ahmad Jamal, Hampton Hawes, Duke Ellington or Herbie Nichols.

Here are a couple modern players who may be a bit similar at times, I know there are more.
Marc Hannaford
Simon Quartrane
Joey Calderazzo
