Royal Academy of Music to mark ECM Records’ 50th Anniversary (30-31 Jan 2020)

It has just been announced that the Royal Academy of Music  will have a mini-festival over two nights to mark the ECM Records 50th Anniversary.

30 January, 7.30 pm Susie Sainsbury Theatre

The Academy Jazz Ensemble will be performing works from Anders Jormin’s ECM release Ad Lucem and pianist Craig Taborn will present a selection of his own compositions (30 Jan).

“In the first half of this concert, one of Scandinavia’s foremost jazz bassists, Anders Jormin, presents music on which he has been working with Academy students, including compositions from his acclaimed ECM release, Ad Lucem. A staple of ECM’s roster for 30 years, Jormin first appeared on the label in the bands of Bobo Stenson, Charles Lloyd and Tomasz Stańko, before making his 2011 album, Xieyi.

After the interval, pianist Craig Taborn presents a selection of his own compositions. Hailed by DownBeat as ‘one of the visionaries of the current wave’, Taborn made his ECM debut with Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory before releasing his solo album, Avenging Angel, in 2011.”

Alumnus Kit Downes leads his trio ENEMY alongside jazz and strings students and the Royal Academy Big Band celebrates Kenny Wheeler’s 90th birthday with a selection of reconstructed charts from the composer’s first 1970s BBC broadcasts (31 Jan).

“Tonight’s event opens with the presentation of honorary membership of the Royal Academy of Music to eminent jazz pianist and alumnus Kit Downes, who then leads his trio, ENEMY, and students from the Jazz and Strings departments in a side-by-side performance.

In the second half of the concert, the Academy Big Band presents the music of Kenny Wheeler, in celebration of the composer’s 90th birthday, alongside guest artists Norma Winstone, Evan Parker and Stan Sulzmann. Wheeler’s original scores from his first BBC broadcasts in the 1970s have been reconstructed for the first time since their original performances at Maida Vale Studios.”
