So it's my Dad's 50th birthday next week. He's a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge jazz fan, so I was thinking of getting him something special in this area. His favorites are in the cool jazz area, like Miles Davis' pre-fusion material, Bill Evans' trios, Dave Brubeck's stuff, etc, but he likes pretty much all of it (blues, big band, bop, etc). Keep in mind that he has hundreds of albums, so don't say something like "Kind of Blue," because he has three versions of that album. LOL
I was thinking something "big," like a collector's box set rather than an obscure album he might not have already.

Thanks!

Miles Davis has a lot of box sets. Does your dad have The Complete Plugged Nickel set from the late-60s? That's an amazing performance of the Second Great Quintet, and one of the last times Miles performed all-acoustic jazz.

I don't believe he does, I'll look into that.

I don't know if his interests go back to Armstrong, but Matt has been very positive about his new box set of early Louie Arnstrong recordings.

Yep, he loves Armstrong - has a number of original cuts of his. I'll look into that as well.
Seeing as we live about a half hour away from Newport, I was thinking of getting some tickets to the famed festival.

Check the lineup, unfortunately, a lot of "jazz" festivals have very little jazz.

Saturday has Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, and Christian McBride, so I'm sold. LOL

Yeah, no filler there.
